Africa is in need of ICT in its schools

Access to technology can be made possible with the help of donors, government and the business sector. However, the sustainability of this ICT remains a serious issue in Africa and in many cases the ICT installed in schools is quickly disused and falls into disrepair.  The reasons for this are numerous and it seems essential that a more entrepreneurial approach toward sustaining these ICT environments is needed.  Edunova argues that young adults and recent school leavers can use these facilities to generate income and, at the same time, ensure that the facilities are maintained and operational.  This workshop will outline a working model and will also invite students to share their ideas as to how they could make some money, whilst supporting the school ICT environment, out of IT labs in schools. The key challenges for education in Africa lies in the access to information, the development of skills and the sustaining of the ICT environments in schools.

Identifying, Planning, Implementing and Sustaining humanitarian projects

Service to our fellow human beings is a wonderful way to build passion, confidence, initiative, and leadership among youths. It provides benefits for both those providing the services and those receiving the service. This workshop will present  how to identify the needs in the community or any humanitarian projects and how to develop a plan that is realistic and can be achieved and sustained. The speaker will discuss some of her recent projects to change the world one child at a time and how they are being sustained.

Slim for the Slums! Poverty in our Backyard

MAPS: What’s the issue and what can be done?

Stop trafficking of girls and children. End Modern Day Slavery Campaign

Trafficking Across the globe  - there are over 2.5 million girls and children trafficked each year for the purpose of prostitution. About 1.2 million children every year are trafficked, with over 1 million of those being led directly into prostitution. Natascha Yogachandra has witnessed it, she has talked to these girls and children in Asia and now wants to make a difference. During this workshop, she will present facts, testimonies from her meetings with the victims and details of her mission to stop this human misery.

In Mozambique, the Lurdes Mutola Foundation has used the power of football to change attitudes around health and hygiene.  What does it take to be a star athlete like Maria Mutola?  One must train hard, but also eat well, take responsible decisions for one’s health.
In using a child's motivation and dream of being a superstar athlete, the program transforms a life of a child as they transition into a responsible young adult…all through the power of football.
Maria Mutola will demonstrate some of the activities from the approach developed by her Foundation, talk about her life as a disadvantaged Mozambican child with a dream to play sports and her rise to international glory.  There will also be time for Q&A.
